TheUCC: A Church of Firsts
The Adult Education Committee proudly brings to St. Lucas Church Ms. Nancy Nollau Mack, a very special individual who will speak to members on June 6, 2010 at a 10:30 a.m. class. Nancy is the great great granddaughter of noted Pastor Louis E. Nollau; she graduated from Eden Seminary in May. Nancy’s session is entitled Louis E. Nollau: Pioneer, Pastor, and Prophet. Rev. Nollau came to this area as a missionary from Prussia in 1837. In 1840 he called a meeting of other pioneer pastors at his parsonage in the Gravois Settlement to form the German Evangelical Church Society of the West, which later became the Evangelical Synod. Rev. Nollau played a part in writing a new catechism and hymnal more suitable for the frontier church and founded a fledgling seminary at Marthasville, Missouri which is now Eden Seminary. He preached at the first commencement service of the seminary at Marthasville, which consisted of two students. His transcendent work, however, was founding the precursor to Deaconess Hospital and the Evangelical Children's Home to serve the needs of the immigrant population in the St. Louis area.
A man of great personal piety and organizational abilities, it was said that he had a "genius for kindness." This year is the 200th anniversary of his birth; and there will be a celebration of this event in his birthplace in Reichenbach, Germany this summer, as well as a colloquy on his work at Eden Seminary in November.
