Informational Items:

Update from Finance Ministry
All committees and ministries with budget lines will receive their annual Budget Letter and Request form this week. They are due by July 31st .
The offerings are down significantly prompting Financial Secretary Ken Fey to further examine, with congregational input, the reasons – more information to follow.

Update from Physical Facilities Ministry
Mudjacking work previously performed on the Preschool entrance sidewalks did not fully resolve the problem and will be addressed by the contractor.
Work on the breaker boxes is proceeding but with some delays due to parts – the contractor is working with church and preschool schedules.
Fall athletic field contract renewing and negotiating is in progress.
Lamour to replace heating element in kitchen dishwasher once parts are available; Council requested a better understanding of cost savings on external contractors thanks to Lamour.

Miscellaneous Updates
Community Meal Grant submitted with notification expected by July 31 st ; we are now an established vendor with the State, should future grant opportunities arise.
Kicked-off planning for September 13 th Celebration Sunday; anyone interested in assisting or volunteering, please contact Councilmember Melinda Borman.

Stump the Pastor Scriptures

Every fall at St. Lucas UCC we put our heads together the attempt to Stump the Pastor. All are invited to submit scriptures - the tricky ones, the ones you rarely hear preached in church. One is selected and then Pastor George preaches an off-the-cuff sermon on whatever is drawn.

Because we are only able to select one of the many great submissions, this summer Pastor George is preaching through some of the scriptures that were left on the cutting room floor (with time to prepare this time). You can see the schedule for the summer below, and look forward to the return of Stump the Pastor this September.

Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day is a day dedicated to remembering beloved pets who have passed away. For many, pets are more than just animals, they are family. The Rainbow Bridge is designed to be an outlet for grief, an opportunity to celebrate the lives of our pets, and a way to connect with others on a similar journey.

Join us on Thursday, August 27 at 6:00 pm for a time of remembering the pets who have touched our lives and have crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Attendees are invited to bring an object of remembrance to be prayed over and blessed.

Isaiah 58 Mission Moment

For our June Mission Moment we welcomed Rev. Brenda Booth, the Executive Director of Isaiah 58 Ministries. She shared some of the many exciting things happening at Isaiah 58, including their recent purchase of a new building.

Isaiah 58 is a food pantry and food distribution center, but more importantly, they build community. The staff and volunteers make it a point to know everyone who walks through the doors by name.

As the need in our community continues to grow, Isaiah 58 has seen the numbers of people they serve increase as well. They are currently seeing well over 1400 visits to the ministry each month. When pre-packed food bags are distributed on Fridays they are seeing over 90 individuals and families. They have outgrown their current space, but are excited to move to a new building that will allow them to be closer to the people they serve.

Your giving to the St. Lucas UCC general fund helps us continue to contribute to Isaiah 58 and their work in the community.

Update from Physical Facilities Ministry
Adding a second handrail to the exterior kitchen stairs is under consideration – the feasibility is in question as the space needed might not reach clearance requirements.
Church and property HVAC systems will now be overseen and maintained by our Maintenance manager Lamour, creating savings by eliminating the need for a third-party contract.

Miscellaneous Updates
Shared a revised draft of Event Planning Checklist for feedback.
Provided a Mayberry Bequest submission update with plans to release a summary to the congregation in the coming weeks.
Presented a confirmation banquet and service planning review document to discuss how to better assist the Youth Leaders in hosting banquet and opportunities for cross ministry collaboration in setup and execution.
Approved moving the August Council Conversation to August 16 th to prevent conflict with Sunday Funday.

America 250 Cemetery Tour

To celebrate America 250, the St. Lucas Heritage Committee is featuring a few of the

many people who served our country and have their final resting place in our cemetery.

Of the over 300 U.S. veterans buried in the St. Lucas Cemetery, we have selected two

who served during the Civil War and another five who served during World War II and

have created a self-guided tour of their graves.

In 2003 the Sappington-Concord Historical Society published a book of stories written

by local men about their experiences in the U.S. Armed Forces. With the permission of

the Historical Society, we are providing the stories found in that book, Hometown

Heroes, for each of the World War II veterans that we are featuring. We, unfortunately,

have limited information about the service of our Civil War veterans and have included

the few details that we know about their service. Both of the Civil War veterans were

also founders of St. Lucas.

Some of the featured servicemen played significant roles in the Sappington-Concord

Historical Society. Leonard “Bud” Borneman initiated and led the Hometown Heroes

project. Carl Spinner was chairman and MC of the SCHS Memorial Day ceremony for

many years. Sylvester Steinnerd was the father of Ray Steinnerd, who served on the

board of the Historical Society for 25 years. Walter Maag and Pete Winter were both

members of the Historical Society as well.

Numbered signs, starting near the large east parking lot, will be posted near each

featured gravesite for a week after Memorial Day.

their time of service? You can buy a copy of Hometown Heroes from the Sappington-

Concord Historical Society.

Sappington-Concord Historical Society will again host their annual Memorial Day celebration in South County. This year's event will be at 9:00 am, Monday, May 25, on the Green at St. Lucas UCC, 11735 Denny Road.

As in previous years, this year's event will include a ceremonial flyover by a local group of Stearman Biplane aircraft owners, the Lindbergh High School Spirit of St. Louis Marching Band, distinguished guest speaker, tribute to MIA/POWs, a vocalist, and more.

Guests are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs, neighbors and friends.
Parking will be available on the east parking lot at St. Lucas UCC.
The annual family celebration is handicap accessible, free and open to the public.

Update on Financial Audit
Audit is complete and a very good overall report.
It suggested some prior period adjustments and those were made in the quarter ending 12/31/25.

Additional update from the Semi-Annual Meeting
Roughly $25,000 in adjustments were made, leaving the year end 2025 deficit at approximately $100,000 instead of the previously reported $125,00.

Financial Secretary recommends a review, not a full audit, every 3-5 years.
Offering revenue remains soft for the first quarter; encouraging a stewardship effort to reinforce importance of giving despite Mayberry request.

Update from Physical Facilities Ministry
The lighting work on the sign facing Denny Road is complete.
Council approved the recommended bid to replace five electrical panels at the cost of $28,000. The work will commence in July.

Miscellaneous Updates
Regarding status of the Parsonage Analysis, the tenant has renewed the lease, with a new term expiring April 30, 2027. Council is actively gathering additional data on the state of the property. Discussion favored waiting to decide on the process for decision-making until data collection is closer to completion.

Action Taken:

Approved the contract with Show-Me Electric to replace five electrical panels for $28,481.

Approved Room 18/20 as the new primary Children's Ministry Sunday School space with conditions including a three week trial period to confirm space sustainability prior to any room modifications, council approve any permanent physical modifications, cleanliness and reasonable organization of the room be maintained, and council periodically review arrangement assuring space continues to meet needs of the broader church.

Reviewed proposed revisions to the Keeping God's Children Safe policy. Postponed approval until May to incorporate a few non-material changes. The existing KGCS policy stays in effect in the interim.

Closed Session Actions:
Approved unpaid leave of absence for Amy Bush from June 8 to July 19.
Finalized plans for celebrating the ministry of Lynn Fey Follis.

Semi-Annual Meeting Actions:
Approved the Perpetual Endowment Trust appointment of Bob Mandava to an unexpired term ending December 31, 2027.
Elected Sara Savat and Carolyn Schwartz to the Preschool Board, both serving three year terms.

Informational Items:

Best Practices for Responding to Requests for Cash from Strangers
Members and staff are strongly discouraged from providing cash to strangers who request assistance while on St. Lucas UCC property. When approached, we encourage directing individuals to community resources that are better equipped to offer support.

Recommended alternatives include:
Sharing the Community Resources for Food & Utility Assistance list from the St. Louis Area Resource Directory ( www.startherestl.org ). For your convenience, copies are available outside the Sanctuary.
Directing individuals to the Little Free Pantry for immediate food assistance.

Additionally, the possibility of laminating and affixing the Food & Utility Assistance resource list to the Little Free Pantry is being explored to improve accessibility.

Event Planning Workflow Reccomendations
Work is underway to develop clearer guidelines for individuals or groups interested in hosting events at St. Lucas UCC. Please contact Tracy Mulderig with comments or suggestions.

Actions Taken:

Approved $2,114 from the Memorial Fund, as recomended, to repair the lighting system for the sign along Denny Road.

Approved revised language for a new three-way Covenant among retired ministers previously employed by St. Lucas UCC returning as members, the St. Lucas UCC Congregation, and the St. Louis Association.

Developed in accordance with the United Church of Christ's 2024 Manual on Ministry and guidance from the St. Louis Association, the covenant articulates shared expectations for participation in the life of the church.

Approved a plan for gathering information and input regarding the Mayberry Bequest and future overall expenditures, which was distributed in a special e-blast and in the March 1st bulletin.

Resilience & Courage: Black History in St. Louis

History of the Black Community in St. Louis

This February, for Black History Month the Social Justice Ministry is highlighting the resilience and courage of the black community in St. Louis, especially in the face of various forms of oppression. The display in the Social Hall includes Dred and Harriet Scott, George L. Vaughn, Maya Angelou, and Mill Creek Valley.

Dred and Harriet Scott filed suit for their freedom in St. Louis in 1846. When their case reached the Supreme Court it was ruled that they, and all African Americans, were not considered citizens of the United States. Opposition to the decision was one of the causes of the Civil War and led to the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth amendments to the constitution. The Scott's struggle for freedom stands as a defining moment in the history of the Civil Rights movement.

George L. Vaughn, a prominent attorney and the son of former slaves, was a towering figure in the St. Louis political arena. He helped forge the Citizens Liberty League to promote and endorse Black political candidates, which resulted in the first Black candidate elected to public office in Missouri. Vaughn was also known for his pivotal role as legal counsel in landmark Supreme Court case focused on restrictive covenants, Shelley v. Kraemer (1948). Restrictive covenants aimed at preventing the sale of property to African Americans.

Maya Angelou was born in St. Louis and a renowned author, poet, and civil rights activist. She is best known for her autobiographical work I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, which addresses themes of racism, trauma, and resilience. Angelou was also involved in the civil rights movement, serving as the northern coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conferenced. In 2011, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama for her contributions to literature and activism.

Mill Creek Valley was a city within the city of St. Louis known as a center for black life until its destruction in 1959. Nearly 20,000 people lived in this community known for vibrant commercial life, rich culture, and popular entertainment venues, but almost no trace of it remains today. Despite racial segregation, Mill Creek was home to a black newspaper, offices for many black professionals, a center of social activism, and the birthplace of ragtime music. The neighborhood, which was destroyed in the 1950s covered 454 acres in what is now the known as the central corridor. The Missouri History Museum currently has an exhibit called Mill Creek: Black Metropolis where you can learn much more about this neighborhood and all that was lost when it disappeared.

Eden Seminary Mission Moment

February Mission Moment

On Sunday, February 8 we were joined by Mary Blaufuss, the Vice President for Advancement and Strategic Partnerships at Eden Seminary. She shared her gratitude for the longstanding relationship between St. Lucas UCC and Eden Seminary.

Classes are in full swing for the spring semester aimed at creating leaders worth following. They are participating in a network model of education where they share courses with 5 other seminaries as way of giving student access to even more class options. They have 23 new students beginning this spring, the largest class in recent years.

Every Tuesday evening they host a chapel service that is open to all. This is a space where student and other community members preach and lead worship. At spring convocation this year they will be honoring the legacy of theologian Walter Bruggeman and will host Rev. Wil Gafney as their speaker.

Developing programs for local congregations remains a priority. Eden continues to add learning opportunities for members of local churches, so that they can continue to grow as leaders in their congregations.

January Mission Moment

On Sunday, January 11 we welcomed back Darlene Sowell, President and CEO of Unleashing Potential for a Mission Moment. Unleashing Potential's mission is to close the opportunity gap for children regardless of their economic circumstances, race, or zip code by building on their strengths.

She shared that at the end of this summer the difficult decision was made to close the direct care early childhood education program at Caroline Mission. Several factors combined to make this program no longer financially sustainable. Their focus has shifted to parent engagement services to continue to support families. Strengthening Resilient Families is a program that prioritizes educating parents about ways to advocate for themselves and their children.

Flexibility and collaboration have been essential parts of fulfilling the mission of Unleashing Potential in the last year. UP relies on and greatly values their many partner non-profits in the area that allow them to meet the varied needs of their families.

September Mission Moment

On Sunday, September 14 we heard a mission moment from Kristin Paul about the transformational work taking place at Camp MoVal. Camp MoVal is located about an hour from St. Louis near Union, MO and features more than 150 acres of beautiful forests, native prairie, natural streams, and a lake.

Like many organizations, Camp MoVal has seen a decrease in participation in the years since the Covid Pandemic. In an effort to ensure that people of all ages continue to experience the transformative work of outdoor ministry, MoVal has leant on congregations like St. Lucas UCC for support.

Missouri Mid-South Conference staff and volunteers have been hard at work completing renovations at camp, staffing programs, and continuing the legacy of MoVal. By welcoming two new ecumenical partners, MoVal has been able to triple the number of children experiencing outdoor ministries.

Kirstin encouraged us to send our kids and grandkids to camp, visit MoVal as a family, and volunteer our time and talents in season and out. Mission Mondays are a time set aside to work on projects around camp and all are invited to pitch in.

Happy Birthday Rev. Samuel Kruse!

In the 145 year history of St. Lucas U CC, the church has been blessed by leaders who have left a profound legacy. One of those leaders, Rev. Samuel Kruse was born on this day in 1858.

Rev. Kruse's father, Michael, immigrated from Heide, Germany and was also a minister who was a part of the second graduation class of the Evangelical Seminary in Marthasville, MO. At age sixteen, Samuel enrolled in the pre-seminary program at Elmhurst College before continuing his theological studies at Eden Seminary. On July 15, 1880, he was ordained by his father into the ministry of the Evangelical Church.

In 1882, Rev. Kruse was called to the recently formed St. Lucas Evangelical Church in Sappington, MO. He was installed on July 2, 1882 and remained in that position until July 26, 1925 -- 43 years!

In his time here, Rev. Kruse formed many groups and ministries in the church:

1884 - Church choir

1890 - Frauenverein (women's fellowship)

1893 - Sunday school

1902 - Youth society

Significant changes to the church grounds also took place during the Kruse years:

1883 - Parsonage

1888 - Purchased five additional acres

1890 - School house (German school)

1899 - Home and outbuilding for Sexton

1904/05 - New stone church

1908 - Added 10 more acres

1922 - Purchase of Park Hill Cemetery

Samuel served as the superintendent of the cemetery, secretary of the cemetery board and the teacher of the German School from 1882-1917. Rev. Kruse served the Synod in a variety of ways. He was chosen in the 1890's to establish a Sunday School program. He was a director of the Emmaus Institution (now known as Emmaus Homes) at Marthasville and St. Charles from 1899-1902. He was a member of the Church Extension Board, the Synodical Historical Commission and a Representative from Missouri District to the General Evangelical Conference. He was a member of the Board of Elmhurst College. While serving on the Board of Directors of Eden Seminary, Rev. Kruse helped with the relocation of the school from north St. Louis to Webster Groves. He received an honorary Dr. of Divinity Degree from the seminary in 1931.

Rev. Kruse and his wife, Amalia, had six children. On July 26, 1925, Rev. Kruse gave his farewell sermon at St. Lucas. He was active in his retirement years. He served as interim pastor of several churches and from 1932 to 1940 as chaplain of the Good Samaritan Home for the Aged. Reverend Kruse died in 1944 and was buried in the St. Lucas Cemetery.

August Mission Moment

On Sunday, August 10, our very own Marty Schmidt shared an update on the work of OKS Inc. OKS is a non-profit organization, created in 2012, dedicated to serving the malnourished children of western Kenya. They accomplish this goal by manufacturing and distributing Pudgy Butter, a peanut butter based ready-to-use therapeutic food that was developed right here in St. Louis.

Marty shared the exciting news that ground was broke on a new factory that will produce and package Pudgy Butter on August 4. The timeline for construction is 4-6 months, with a goal of opening the facility in January of 2026. This facility will allow OKS to increase production from 6 to 100 metric tons per year.

The impact on the surrounding counties will be significant, but that is just the beginning. The team is hopeful that this is a model that will be able to be reproduced around the world.

Mission Trip Recap 2025

Our high school youth mission trip was an incredible experience and refreshing to see Back Bay Mission fully embracing and serving the core values of the United Church of Christ. The following letter was from one of Back Bay Mission’s summer interns, Hazel. While this letter was intended just for our group, I think it summarizes the impression Back Bay Mission had on our group and the impact our group had on Back Bay Mission. And therefore important to share with the congregation:

St. Lucas UCC,

First, I would like to apologize for not being able to give a formal goodbye to you all. I have another event to attend.

I do not normally write letters or thank yous to volunteers, but I really thought it was important for me to write to you all. This week, you brought a lot to this campus and every program you touched you left better. Every staff member you interacted with this week was left with a smile and seemed so thankful for the help you left. When I was doing my rounds this week you all had such an attention to detail and always wanted to help where you could. So thank you!

When you go home, I hope you are left with fond memories of Back Bay Mission and making good trouble, and many memories of laughs and jokes. I hope you leave and think about your own community and reflect how you can make good trouble in Missouri.

Most importantly, I believe everyone here would love to see you next year. You are welcome back anytime. I hope you had a great experience strengthening neighborhoods, seeking justice, and of course transforming lives.

Another one of the staff members, during the morning presentations about the various work of Back Bay Mission, told us that “God is well pleased” with our work and group. Lynn and I have been involved in the UCC our whole lives, and this was a new, but powerful phrase to us both. I knew immediately that this would be the theme of our worship weekend. Our Mission Trip youth, adults, Lynn and I are excited to share our trip with you through this letter, worship, and luncheon.

Habitat for Humanity Updates

July Mission Moment

On Sunday, July 13 Paul Litzsinger shared about the history and impact of Habitat for Humanity in the St. Louis area and beyond. Habitat for Humanity began in the 1970s as a way to practice "partnership housing." This concept centered on those in need of housing working alongside volunteers to build quality, affordable housing built at no profit. Projects would be funded by donations from supporters and new homeowners would make payments on zero interest loans.

Nearly 50 years later, Habitat has completed millions of projects. In St. Louis there is a strong partnership between Habitat and local UCC churches, which has produced 50 completed projects. Over time Habitat houses have come to be known as a valuable addition to the neighborhoods where they are located.

In May a group from St. Lucas UCC was a part of completing a successful project and another one is planned for September. If you would like to learn more about volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, contact Paul Litzsinger at plitzsinger@gmail.com .

Celebrating Juneteenth

In 2021, Juneteenth completed the long journey of seeking official recognition from the government and becoming a federal holiday in the United States. Juneteenth National Independence Day is celebrated annually on June 19 to commemorate the ending of slavery.

President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation to take effect on January 1, 1863 and free all enslaved people in the Confederacy. On June 19, 1865 Major General Granger ordered full enforcement of the law a full 900 days later. Because of its remote location at the time, Texas was the last state where slavery remained.

Celebrations that began in Galveston, TX grew to attract thousands of attendees. When the Jim Crow Era began many celebrations declined or disappeared all together. It was not until the late 1960s that the tradition saw a revival and cities and states began to make their own Juneteenth proclamations. Modern celebrations have become multicultural events with readings of the Emancipation Proclamation, music, food, and more.

Emmaus Homes Updates

June Mission Moment

On Sunday, June 8 we heard from our own Paul Litzsinger about the work of Emmaus Homes. Founded in 1893 in Marthasville, MO., Emmaus Homes mission is to help people with developmental disabilities live as independently as possible. The programs and services they offer are for adults of any age and are tailored to meet each person's unique needs and goals. Emmaus Homes is a faith-based, non-profit organization serving clients who live in over 50 group homes located throughout St. Louis City, St. Louis, St. Charles, Warren and Franklin counties.

One of the major needs for Emmaus Homes is for Direct Support Professionals (DSP) to work with their clients. The positions range from full-time to part-time with varying shifts and schedules. Ideal DSPs are natural helpers who can work with clients to achieve a variety of goals.

For more than 130 years, as a faith-based organization, Emmaus Homes have provided quality services, caring for the whole person for their whole life. You can continue to support this important work by making a gift to the St. Lucas UCC general fund!

Helping our Neighbors Impacted by Tornadoes

Dear Beloved Community,

Though St. Lucas UCC was mildly affected by the recent tornadoes, a large part of St. Louis was. From Clayton to Forest Park, The Loop to St. John's UCC- The Beloved Community, you can see the fallen trees, intersections without functional traffic lights, and automobiles trapped under branches.

This is a lot to absorb and understand. Some of us may feel numb, shocked, unsure, or because we can't "see it", disconnected. But the damage of the storm is real and affects many lives, families, businesses, churches and neighborhoods.

As members of St. Lucas UCC, who have been transforming lives as the hands and feet of Christ since 1880, there are things we can do. Our Social Justice Team has already been in active communication.

Here are 3 things I would like to share, as someone who has pastored through disasters:

1.) When Council meets on Thursday we are discussing how St. Lucas UCC can best respond AND exploring how we can create a team that can respond to further events.

2.) Right now, you may feel an urgency to act and donate items. Money is always the best response. Making a donation to the Red Cross is a great way to immediately make a difference and know your donation is being used. Also, the MO Mid-South Conference has set up a special fund just for the 2025 St. Louis Tornado Response to make a donation to support recovery efforts.

3) Two weeks from now, folks will forget about this event and move on, while the people affected are still struggling. That can often be the hardest time for those who have been directly affected. We, as a church, are considering what can we do 2-4 weeks from now to assist those who are still dealing with the effects of the tornado.

What happened on Friday is tragic, and the scars of the tornado will linger for a long, long time. Let us welcome and see how the Holy Spirit is calling us to faithfully respond as a united body in Christ.

Memorial Day

Remember and Honor

Memorial Day is a time to remember and honor the sacrifice of those who gave their lives for the freedom and security of our nation. The holiday originated during the Civil War, when citizens placed flowers on the graves of soldiers who had fallen in battle. It was first called Decoration Day, and several places claim to be its birthplace.

At 3:00 pm local time, a national moment of silence is observed to pay tribute to the fallen. The tradition was initiated by President Bill Clinton in 2000, and is known as the National Moment of Remembrance.

St. Lucas UCC remembers those from our church who died while serving their country:

Andrew Huegel

Andrew Huegel died during WWI in France on October 23, 1918 at the age of 27. He died of pneumonia while serving in the Army. Many WWI vets died of illness due to spending so much time in wet trenches. He’s buried in the St. Lucas Cemetery.

Harold Klein

Harold Valentine Klein died in WWII in Germany on January 18, 1945 at the age of 26. He was killed in action. He is buried in the St. Lucas Cemetery.

Larry Reynolds

Larry Reynolds was killed in a Jeep accident in Germany while serving. He died on June 3, 1945 and is buried in France.

Charles Jacob Rott

Charles Jacob Rott died in WWII on May 10, 1943 while serving in the Navy at age 36. He’s buried at Jefferson Barracks.

Arthur William Spindler

Arthur William Spindler died on April 1, 1944 at age 19. He is buried at St. Lucas. News of his death was in articles in the Post Dispatch. The airplane that he was piloting in WWII couldn’t stop in time on the aircraft carrier when he was landing.

Marshall Weidlich

Marshall Weidlich stepped on a mine one day after D-Day. He died in Normandie, France on July 19, 1944 at age 24. He’s buried at the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial. He was married at the time of his death (married in 1943). The Weidlich name is common in St. Lucas history. Bob Weidlich is a current member.

The Sappington-Concord Historical Society will return to St. Lucas United Church of Christ this year to host the biggest, little annual Memorial Day celebration in South County. This year’s event will be at 9:00 am, Monday, May 26, on the green at St. Lucas United Church of Christ, 11735 Denny Road, 63126. The annual family-friendly celebration is free and open to the public. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, and parking will be available on the east parking lot at St. Lucas UCC.
