Backpack Program

About the Program

The Backpack Program at St. Lucas serves the surrounding community by providing meals to food insecure school-age children in the Lindbergh School District.   The program is in-part coordinated through Lindbergh Lights the Way, which is a committee of the Foundation led by Lindbergh Schools’ social workers, community leaders and parent volunteers.

We pack meals every other Thursday morning. We also deliver large quantities of snacks to schools four times a year. If you would like to help with meal packing or snack delivery, you can reach out to Robyn Sobo.

Get Involved!

Backpack Program volunteers picking up snacks for students.

During the school year, volunteers order and purchase food, gather together every two weeks to pack the food in grocery bags and then deliver the bags to the individual schools within the district.  The counselors and social workers at each school receive the meals and distribute them to the appropriate child in need.  The bags are placed in the child’s backpack to take home.

Families receiving Backpack food are vetted by the social workers within the district.  Our committee is then given the number of families requiring assistance. During the school year ending May 2023, the Backpack Program provided a total of 1,110 meals to children in 6 elementary and 2 middle schools.    In addition to the meals, we also provide snacks to the schools to be distributed by the school nurses and counselors to children who are unable to bring snacks from home.  We deliver large quantities of snacks to schools four times during the school year.  Backpack food and snacks are both funded by the Loaves and Fishes mission.
