Our Approach

Core Areas of Learning Development

At St. Lucas Preschool, your child will learn through direct experiences and age-appropriate activities woven into each day by our dedicated, enthusiastic teachers. Our preschool program attempts to focus on five core areas of learning development:

Physical and Relational Development

Our program will aid your child in gaining greater command of their body and to guide them to more satisfying relationships with other children and adults. Large muscle activities and fine motor exercises will allow your child to practice skills within their age group. While engaged in these activities your child will be learning to develop constructive relationships.

Social and Scientific Understanding

Our program will extend and deepen your child’s understanding of their social and scientific world. Community helpers visit classrooms, films and special events are planned to complement classroom study, and simple science experiments are performed to stimulate your child’s curiosity and desire to investigate. A variety of topics, including nutrition, animals, nature, seasons, measurements, and colors are included in our curriculum.

Listening and Language Skills

Our program will help your child develop their listening and speaking competency. The relaxed atmosphere of the classroom encourages conversation. Sharing experiences verbally helps your child develop language skills as well as confidence in themselves as a contributor to the group.

Creativity Through Music and the Arts

Our program will open the doors of creativity and self-discipline through music, literature and the arts. Simple art projects help students become familiar with tools and techniques of creation. Students participate in regular music class and perform for parents at the end of the year.

Critical Thinking Skills

Our program gives students the opportunity to develop cognitive skills such as the ability to see relationship, generalize, arrange and rearrange information, and think critically. This prepares your child to accept new and changing concepts as they grow.

Kindergarten Prep

St. Lucas has an excellent reputation for producing students ready for kindergarten. As noted by a local kindergarten teacher in our Parent Survey, “Well, I don’t need to worry about this student, they’re a St. Lucas kid.”

Small Class Setting

With our small class format, your child enjoys one-on-one instruction from a caring teacher. The teacher to student ratio is 1:8 in younger classes and 1:10 in older classes. All classes are arranging according to age.

Nurturing Environment

Our teachers are enthusiastic, dedicated, cooperative, industrious, and creative. They excel at building a rapport with each student. We look for teachers who enjoy children in the classroom and beyond. We have always been blessed to be able to choose teachers who have proven skills, traits, and sensibilities to nurture each child at St. Lucas.
