Backpack Program Set to Begin Another Year

Updated: Oct 1

In the fall of 2016 our Backpack Program began in partnership with the Lindbergh School District. Each week we pack and deliver a meal for food insecure students within the district. We work with school counselors who identify which students receive meals and offer guidance on how we can best meet the needs of those in the program. Meals have evolved over the years, but now include simple dishes the kids can get ready themselves, fresh fruit or vegetables, and a snack or treat.

In 2016 we packed between 25 and 40 meals per week. Our efforts have grown to be able to serve between 50 and 69 meals per week. You might even see our set up in the Fireside room where we pack. Our numbers will fluxuate throughout the year, but we do our best to be flexible as needs change.

During the 2023-2024 school year we packed 1,639 meals and delivred them to 9 schools within the district. We also deliver snacks each quarter to all 10 schools in the district. Last year we invested $13,557 dollars in this program. We have about 10-15 volunteers throughout the year who help purchase, pack, and deliver meals.

We know that helping the kids of our community stay well fed makes a difference in all areas of their lives. If you would like to volunteer or learn more about how you can get involved in the Backpack Program email Katy Forand at katyforand@gmail.com.
